Session Information: Science and Hype: The (re)Evolution of Emotional Intelligence
Key Concepts:Why EI is an intelligence and how it can be measured.

The team of John D. Mayer, David Caruso, and Peter Salovey have been writing about emotional intelligence (EI) for nearly two decades. We view emotional intelligence as a way of characterizing the skills and abilities that help us to recognize emotions in ourselves and others; understand these feelings and use language to communicate them; harness the power of emotion as a tool in cognitive activities like problem-solving, reasoning, and creativity; and manage emotions both in oneself and in other people. These are competencies, we believe, that can be developed through practice and that are critical in leading organizations. In this talk, Peter Salovey will discuss the historical roots of emotional intelligence, the way in which thinking about it has evolved, and an approach to measuring it as a set of interrelated abilities. He will highlight findings from a program of research establishing the value of emotional intelligence in school, work, and family situations. He will then discuss the hoopla that has surrounded the discussion of emotional intelligence world-wide, and try to separate fact from fiction in discussing the promise and future of EI research and practice.
Workshop with Marc Brackett: "Teaching Emotional Intelligence to Middle School Students and Assessing Its Impact." And a description is as follows:
In an interactive format, Peter Salovey and Marc Brackett will describe a newly published, experiential curriculum for teaching emotional intelligence to middle school students. This curriculum has already been introduced into several school systems with promising results -- children enjoy the exercises and teachers enjoy presenting the lessons. The impact of this curriculum can be evaluated at the level of individual children using the Youth Version of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT-YV), published this year by Multi-Health Systems, Inc. The workshop will include a discussion of the MSCEIT-YV.
