Session Information:

Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Success of Projects - An Analytical Study of Emotional Intelligence in Selected Project Organizations of Pakistan

Key Concepts:

The value of EI in project management
Projects are the building blocks of an investment plan. In the developing countries all investment plans are associated with the development plans, therefore success of projects is vital for the economic and social development of these countries. At least fifty percent of the problems responsible for the project failure can be attributed to the behavior of human resource system in project organizations (POs). Therefore, tremendous potential exists for emotions to play with the fate of projects. Performance of a project is deeply impacted by the Emotional Intelligence (EI), especially in term of sustainability of the designed outcomes and benefits. Project failure in a resource-starved, poverty stricken developing country like Pakistan, is of serious concern. Alone in case of Asian Development Bank funding in Pakistan, during 1968-2001, cost incurred on the unsustainable and/or failed projects has been estimated at US$ 4.6 billion where as Pakistan owes US$ 6.5 billion as debt to ADB. The paper would present results obtained from a research study based on primary data to index various dimensions of emotional intelligence of project managers, project staff, top management, functional managers and vendours/contractors with a view to determine how EI influences the performance of projects in organizations.
