Trainer, coach, therapist, and author of Emotional Intelligence for Optimal Personal Growth (South Africa).

Rina de Klerk, Ph.D.

The wonderful thing about EQ is that it teaches us that emotions are important, therefore I can be honest and say that I always feel a bit uncertain when I have to introduce myself. Mainly because I want your to get a true picture of who I am inside and what I stand for. So I'll try my best.

I am a social worker, currently working in my own private practice. I am involved in training, coaching and therapy, on a individual and group basis (mainly in South Africa). My Ph.D. research is on burnout and work stress.

I've been involved in EQ since 1998. I am co-author of three books on Emotional Intelligence, two of which are workbooks. I've written scientific as well as popular articles and am a part time lecturer on EQ at the University of Johannesburg. I also act as external examiner for Masters and Ph.D. students. I strongly believe in the integration of theory and practice. Before I started my practice I was working at a Child welfare society as specialist and later as Director.

I have four very special children (aged 18,18, 16 and 13) and are happily married. I life in a beautiful country with many challenges. I love nature and are truly thankful for Gods' blessings and grace. I strive to make a difference, give hope, be honest, and truly care -- and walk my talk according to my value system.

Session Information:

Emotional Awareness a Prerequisite for Emotional Control.

Key Concepts:

Awareness of the process of emotions and different practical techniques to control emotions.
Emotional control is one of the most important aspects in emotional intelligence; however, without emotional awareness control can hardly be possible. People need to realize that there is a big difference between suppression and control of your emotions. If we control our emotions appropriately we can enhance the quality of our lives. In this presentation the delegates will be taught the following:

  • To accept their feelings and that all feelings are fine, but not all behavior (you have a choice).
  • That one's feelings act as messengers to tell you about your needs and thinking patterns
  • That awareness can enhance control and that you pay a high price if you suppress your feelings (consequences of suppression).
  • Different methods/techniques to control your emotions

Emotions enhance our most important personal and business relationships. To express or control them inappropriately is to risk derailing our careers, damaging relationships and eventually ruin our health.
