George McCown George E. McCown is Co-founder and a Managing Director of McCown De Leeuw & Co. (MDC), a private investment banking firm that builds companies that make a difference in partnership with management teams. Before co-founding MDC, George spent 18 years at Boise Cascade Corporation in a series of general management positions in paper, packaging, building materials and real estate. When George left at the end of 1980, he was Senior Vice President for the Building Materials Group and President of Boise Cascade Home and Land Corporation. Prior to joining Boise Cascade, George worked with venture capital pioneer Georges F. Doriot, both at Harvard Business School and at American Research and Development Corporation (NYSE). He received an MBA from Harvard University and BS in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. Since inception, MDC has raised $1.8 billion in equity, acquired 36 platform companies and made over 100 follow-on acquisitions. George is an officer and director of several current and former MDC portfolio companies including service as Chairman of the Board of Building Materials Holding Corporation (NASDAQ); Vice-chairman of Vans, Inc. He serves as Chairman of SARCOM and a director of The Brown Schools, DIMAC Corporation, Home Asset Management Corporation (AmReit, NYSE), Fitness Holdings International, and EM Solutions, Inc. Among his many non-profit activities, George serves on the Board of Overseers of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He was president of the Stanford Alumni Association in the late 1970’s and served as a trustee of Stanford University from 1980-1985 where he chaired the Finance Committee and the Investment Policy Sub-Committee. George serves as Chairman of the Wyoming Centennial Everest Expedition, Vice-chairman of the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School and a Director of the American Himalayan Foundation. He is also on the Policy Advisory Board of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies (former Chairman) and the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics at U.C. Berkeley. For the last ten years George has been Chairman of the World Business Academy, an international educational and membership organization dedicated to building a better world through business. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Harvard Business School Association of Northern California, Stanford Associates, the World Presidents’ Organization, Chief Executives Organization, the Explorers Club, the Bohemian Club and Business Executives for National Security. George and his wife, Karen, have eight children and five grandchildren.
