Dr. Harriett Brown Arnold
is currently serving as Associate Professor and Director of the Single Subject Credential Programs in the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education at the University Of The Pacific, Stockton, California.
A veteran educator, she has served as an elementary school teacher, a middle school vice-principal, elementary school principal, social worker, director of staff development, human resources/personnel and educational consultant. Her professional service has been in suburban elementary, secondary and community college districts. In the area of higher education, she served as a coordinator in the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP).
Dr. Arnold was educated at San Francisco State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Welfare; San Jose State University receiving a Masters of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Reading; and the University of San Francisco where she received her Doctorate Degree with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction.
Her professional associations include Executive Board, California Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (CASCD); Constituency Board of Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD); Association of California School Administrators (ACSA); California Council On The Education Of Teachers (CCET); Phi Delta Kappa (PDK); and other educational organizations.
Her community and civic affiliations include San Jose Chapter of the Links, Inc., National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); American Association of University Women (AAUW); and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She is a former commissioner, Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women, Education Chairperson and a Former Delegate, to the White House Conference on Commissions on the Status of Women representing California. Presently, she is a member of the Board of Directors of the History Museums of San Jose and also serves on a variety of university and community committees. A member of the California State Department of Education Social Science-History Textbook Selection Committee she brings her background, knowledge and expertise in the areas of teacher education, social studies and history.
Dr. Arnold has received several educational awards primarily in~ the area of curriculum and instruction. Her activity as a chairperson for the Western Association of Schools And Colleges (WASC), Accrediting Commission For Schools provide her with opportunities to foster excellence and improvement in both public and private schools. Her publications continue to be in the area of education with an emphasis in curriculum, instruction, and the role of emotions in learning.
Her teacher training projects have involved teacher training for the Ministry of Education in the Bahamas, where she trained elementary teachers in the area of reading. She serves as the Facilitator of the Network for Research on Affective Factors in Learning a special interest group of educators interested in the role of emotions and learning and is funded by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
In August, 1993, she published the book Antioch: A Place of Christians. This publication is a poignant view of the founders of the church and the chronicles of nineteenth century African-American trailblazers in the City of San Jose.
Succeeding in the Secondary Classroom: Strategies for Teachers is her second book and has the secondary beginning teacher as a focus. This book is the result of a program and research grant by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. She is also co-editor of Fostering Knowledgeable, Responsible and Caring Students, a book which provides strategies for classroom teachers in the affective domain and includes work by leaders in the social and emotional learning field.
