| Focus Session: Emotional Intelligence: Theory, Measurement, and Application | Sat, May 6,
10:45 |
Emotional intelligence involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions (Salovey & Mayer, 1990). The specific competencies involved in emotional intelligence include (a) appraising and expressing emotions in the self and others, (b) understanding emotions and emotional knowledge, (c) regulating emotion in the self and others, and (d) using emotions in adaptive ways to facilitate cognitive activities and motivate behavior (Mayer & Salovey, 1997). In this presentation, I begin with a brief history of the idea of emotional intelligence, connecting it to related ideas in the emotions and intelligence research fields. The challenges involved in measuring emotional intelligence are considered next, as we discuss how to measure emotional intelligence as an ability (rather than through self-report). I will then focus on the relationship between emotion-related competencies and physiological and real-world outcomes such as the release of cortisol, cognitive rumination, and complaints of physical symptoms when stressed. I will then turn to the application of emotional intelligence in education and business, and mention the kinds of programs that are likely, in my view, to have the best chance of improving participants' emotional intelligence. Finally, I will comment on the popularization of emotional intelligence by the media throughout the world and suggest future directions for research and application. |
